The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX)

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX)

Summary: The European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

At stake: Particularly pertinent given the UK is an island nation, and the EU has proven ambitions to run maritime policy.

What they say: “Vision: The European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice” – FRONTEXFRONTEX

Exposure: Unclear. Institutional entanglements should fall but some may be maintained.

Action: HMG should cooperate in policing the European continental edge (the EU’s “external waters”) as a quid pro quo for a default of total forceable return of all illegal migrants crossing the Channel. This may support, but need not be, through FRONTEX; should also be conditional on good order in fisheries management; and only apply in the Mediterranean (without compromising Sovereign Base Area (SBA) provisions).
